When I first discovered West Wing Fan Fiction there were a number of terms that are commonly used but seldom explained.
So here's my attempt at keeping things clear. If I've gotten something wrong or there is a term (or terms) you'd like to see added to this list, just e-mail me at jdficwriter@yahoo.com and let me know.
AU - Alternate Universe. Refers to a story that deviates in whole or in part from the West Wing canon.
Canon - West Wing story lines, characters and situtations that are seen on The West Wing (The TV version) or comes directly from the creators of the show. The "Bible" and guidelines used by many fan fic writers to frame their stories.
Fan Fic - Stands for "Fan Fiction". Fictional stories (in this case about The West Wing) written by writers not affiliated in any way with NBC, Warner Bros or any other agencies or people related to The official West Wing TV program. They write for their own enjoyment and the enjoyment of others. As always it is for no profit, only entertainment.
Fic - A fan fiction story (see above).
Fluff - A story that is pretty light in tone or plot.
J/D or JD - Stand for "Josh and Donna" (West Wing characters).
Lurking - Someone that reads the message boards, West Wing Fan Fiction websites or chat rooms but doesn't post any replies, threads or ideas. A silent partner if you will.
NC-17 Fiction - Fiction that should not be read by anyone under 18. Usually involves sexually explicit scenes (can also be for especially graphic violence). Means that same thing it does when you go to the movies.
Newbie - Someone that is new or inexperienced.
Philately - Real definition is the practice of stamp collecting. For Josh and Donna is a subtle reference to sex. Appears in the West Wing episode "Galileo" in season 2.
PWP - Stands for "Plot, What Plot" or "Porn Without Plot". Refers to a story that is fluff, porn for the sake of being porn (with no other redeeming value), or fluffy porn.
Subtext - "Reading between the lines", Josh and Donna have an abundance of subtext, meaning there's often more than one meaning to their conversations and their relationship (i.e., there's more going on between them than meets the eye).
Shipper - Derived from "relationship." When people say "I ship JD" they mean that they believe that Josh and Donna are or should be in a relationship.
Slash - A story involving a sexual relationship or sexual situations between members of the same sex. Slash usually involves West Wing characters that, under canon, aren't same sex oriented. For example, a lot of slash involves stories of Sam and Josh.
Smut - Sexually graphic or explict scenes. |
